On a blue oval 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height, a gold caltrap above a blue scroll with the motto "FOREVER FORWARD" in gold lettering.
The color blue is used for Infantry, the gold color symbolizing leadership and achievement. The caltrap is an ancient offensive weapon employed to deny the use of certain pertinent terrain to hostile forces and alludes to the attack, seizure and staying power of the Brigade.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 99th Reconnaissance Troop on 18 January 1943. It was redesignated for the 197th Infantry Brigade on 11 April 1967. It was amended to correct the description on 15 September 1972.
